How to Clean a Gym Floor
Sweep hardwood floors with a microfiber dust mop every morning. This is called “dry-mopping.” Dry-mopping will get rid of most of the dust and dirt that gets on the floors. By sweeping in the morning, you can get rid of any dust that has settled on the floor overnight before athletes come in to play.[1] X Research source Regular dust mops may not get rid of dirt effectively. It is important that you use a microfiber mop head. You can buy these from cleaning supply stores or hardware stores.
Vacuum rubber floors and mats daily. Instead of sweeping rubber surfaces, use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt. This is especially important for mats placed near the entrances, where people might track in dirt from outside.[2] X Research source
Mop the floor with a cleaning solution once a week. Choose a cleaning solution based on the type of flooring and finish installed. Mix the solution with water. Soak a towel in the solution and wring it out so that it is damp but not dripping. Wrap the damp towel over a push brush. Use this towel to mop the floors.[3] X Research source Wood floors need an alcohol-based cleaning solution. Check that the solution is safe for the type of finish
you have on the floors (which will be either water or oil based). Follow the instructions on the label to mix it with the right amount of water. For rubber floors, add 1 part mild dish detergent or floor cleaner to 10 parts water. Mix until it is soapy. Avoid using strong solvents, like alcohol, or cleaners with acids. These can wear down the floor over time.[4] X Research source Using a damp towel instead of a traditional mop keeps you from using too much water, which can damage the floors.
Remove scuff marks and stains with a soaked microfiber cloth. Choose a cleaner made for floors. Soak a clean, non-abrasive cloth in the solution and use it to gently buff away the stain. Do not use metal scrubbers, as this could scratch your floor.[5] X Research source You can buy cleaners specially made for wooden and rubber floors at flooring stores, janitorial supply companies, and some sports supply stores. Some cleaners may come in a spray bottle. You can spray these directly on the stain and rub it out with a clean cloth.
Learn the terms of your floor's warranty. In some cases, using an autoscrubber on the floor may void the warranty you have on the floor. Read through the installer's
handbook that came with the floors. Understand what type of polish is compatible with your finish and how often you can scrub the floors without damaging them.[6] X Research source
Rent or buy an autoscrubber. If you only occasionally scrub your facility, you may be able to just rent a scrubber from a flooring store or a hardware store. That said, it may be a good idea to invest in an autoscrubber for long-term use. You may need to order these from the flooring store or a janitorial supply company.[7] X Research source There are many models of autoscrubber to choose from. Make sure to read the manual carefully, as instructions for using the scrubber can vary between models. You will also need to get cleaning solution for the machine. There are cleaning solutions specially made for automatic scrubbers. You can buy these from the same company as your autoscrubber or from a janitorial supply company.
Put a fresh cleaning pad on the machine. Follow the instructions in the machine's manual to attach the pad to the pad driver beneath the machine. Use a soft, non-abrasive pad to prevent scratches. Do not use medium or hard pads on gym floors.[8] X Research source
Add water and cleaning
solution to the water tank. Use a cleaning solution that is designed for your autoscrubber and which is compatible with your floor's finish. How much water and cleaning solution you need to add depends on the brand of autoscrubber you are using. The water tank is usually located on the front or top of the autoscrubber.[9] X Research source In many cases, you will add 1 part cleaning solution to 10 parts water. Most gym floors have either a water or oil based finish. Get a cleaning solution that will work with your type of finish.
Turn on the autoscrubber. The key and buttons for the autoscrubber are usually located on the back of the machine under or next to the handle. Turn the key or press the on button to start the machine. For more information, refer to the machine's manual.[10] X Research source
Push the autoscrubber along the gym floor to clean it. Slowly guide the scrubber forward in a straight line. When you have reached the end of the gym, turn the scrubber gently to make a new line beside the first. Do not press down on the autoscrubber or you may scratch the floor.[11] X Research source Start at the farthest corner from the exit and work your way towards the exit so that
you do not have to walk across the clean floors. The floor will dry quickly as you walk across the floor.
Wipe up any spills immediately. Both wooden and rubber floors can absorb liquids and stains quickly. To make sure there is no lasting damage on your floor, make sure that all spills are cleaned up as soon as possible. Wipe up the mess using a paper towel or a clean cloth.
Ban street shoes from being worn on the floors if possible. People can track in all kinds of dirt and grime on their shoes when they come into the gym. While it may be difficult to enforce, try posting signs to ban street shoes from the gym.[12] X Research source Athletes should change into gym shoes before going out onto the floor. When visitors come to the gym, encourage them to stay off of the hardwood floor as much as possible.
Put down rubber walk-on mats near the entrances and bleachers. Because it can be hard to ban street shoes entirely, make sure that you have rubber mats near the entrance and bleachers. This will keep visitors from bringing in dirt from outside.[13] X Research source
Recoat hardwood floors once a year. Talk to the floor's installer or hire a contractor to recoat the floor. To do
this, the contractor will sand down the old finish and apply a new one. Recoating will reduce the number of scuff marks on the floor, and it will keep the glossy sheen of the floor intact.[14] X Research source
Whether you have a hardwood court or a rubber gym floor, dirt and sweat can damage the floor's finish or cause athletes to slip. To keep your gym pristine, make sure that you clean the floors daily. For more intense cleaning to remove residue or sweat build-up, use an automatic scrubber machine (also known as an autoscrubber). Enforce some basic gym rules to keep the floor pristine for as long as possible.
