How to Customize Jerseys
Pick a team color. One of the most important decisions in the design of your jersey will be not only the color of the jerseys themselves but also of the print. If you are modeling after another team, you simply need to match what they use - purple and yellow if trying to match the Los Angeles Lakers, for example. Typically, white print is the cheapest and most common. If the color you pick for the jersey is too light of a color though, you might switch to a black print for the lettering. For most jersey designs, you just need two colors. If you are going to be creating a more elaborate design with multiple colors, consider consulting a color wheel to match your primary color to complementary colors.[1] X Research source
Decide on your text. Most often the team’s name will be featured on the front side of the jerseys. Depending on budgets, the individual players’ names can be across the upper back as well. Lastly, you will want to put the players’ numbers at least on the back of the jersey. Check with your league’s regulations to see if the numbers are required to be on front and back, or if there are any other must-haves. Some sports also require that the numbers used do
not exceed the digit “5” - 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, etc., for example. This is so referees that need to call a foul on a player can do so with no more than two hands, preventing confusion for bookkeepers.
Design your custom artwork. If you want a special logo to go on the front of the jersey or some cool font effects, you can easily do this on your own with some inspiration from the internet. Search for some similar designs or ideas online, and then either on the computer or by hand, draw some variations to make it your own. Most local printing shops will be able to help you turn hand-drawn designs into the real thing. It will be a little harder to get an online shop to do the same. If you are skilled in Adobe products like Photoshop or Illustrator, or any other CAD (computer-aided drawing) software that can help you digitize your ideas, doing so yourself can help make sure you get the details down just how you want them.
Get help designing your jersey. Whether you aren’t able to or just don’t want to deal with some of the headache of designing something yourself, it is pretty easy to find help through your print shop to get a custom design started. Both local and
online shops will typically have staff that you can talk to about any of your needs, and they will draw up a preview that you can either approve or continue to redesign - just ask! Custom designs or fonts can help your team stand out but will require some more work either on your part or that of your printing company (which will mean more cost for the order).
Collect the details of your players. Before actually quoting or ordering, you will need to have the number of jerseys needed and in what sizes. Making a spreadsheet can be helpful to keep track of player’s name, number and size preference.
Support local print shops. A quick internet search or flip through a phone book can help point you to your local sports apparel print shops. Supporting local shops helps promote your local economy, and you can often get better prices with better customer service.
Call around for quotes. It’s often best to call around to a couple of places to get a general idea on price since that’s often the most important deciding factor. Simply ask for a quote on the number of jerseys you need for which sport, and go ahead and discuss your time frame to make sure they can meet it. If ordering a
team’s basketball jerseys, simply ask what a dozen jerseys (or however many are on the team) with one or two colors of print will cost. Cost will typically vary by the number of colors used to print the jerseys, the actual quantity, and whether you need front and back printed. As mentioned, the simpler the design, the cheaper it will probably be. Call around until you have found a shop that meets your budget and design expectations.
Check online for additional options. If you don’t live near a local shop, or if they are too busy, for example, to get your order completed in your timeframe, check online. There are a number of websites that can help you get your designs setup, quoted and ordered as well.[2] X Research source Online shops can sometimes be as quick as a local shop in producing and shipping your jerseys. However, if there is much back and forth about design or proofs, there can be some additional delay.
Submit your design for proofing. Regardless of going local or working online, you will first and foremost submit your design to make sure it meets the requirements of the shop. Whether you’ve created your own or the shop you’ve selected is going to help with your
designs, rest assured you will get a proof of the final design back before printing begins. This ensures a happy customer (you)! If something is incorrect or not what you are hoping for, be sure to bring it up now. Deciding you don’t like the white on green color scheme after the shirts are printed is probably not going to be grounds for a refund. Online vendors usually have web applications that allow you to do the design on the site itself, giving you live previews as you work. This can be helpful in making font or color decisions.
Approve the proof and details. This will be your last chance to change anything before prints are made. Make sure the proof you receive looks as you expect, including correct spelling and sizing. Also, be sure to re-discuss the timeframe and what the final cost will be.
Collect your jerseys when they are finished. Custom jerseys can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the shop and quantity needed. Most places will use a vinyl cutout to transfer to the jersey itself which is a fairly quick process though. If shopping online, you should get shipment updates via your email and a tracking number. Consider writing a review after the
process is complete to show your appreciation!
Whether you are starting your own sports team or are simply a big fan, customizing jerseys is a great way to show support and look good - not to mention they make great keepsakes! There are a number of popular methods for printing jerseys, and with the rise of internet printing companies, it’s never been easier!
